About e2chameleon

The e2chameleon Information Security Resource is brought to you by Ian Kelly, an Information Security Analyst in the UK utilities industry.

My intention is to share with you my understanding of the many issues surrounding the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information, whether stored on a computer, transmitted over the internet, written on paper or even spoken in public. Information Security is not just about computers.

Why e2chameleon?

A number of people have asked me why the site is called e2chameleon. A few years ago I read an article in a magazine (I honestly can't remember which one). It was describing some of the qualities that people in Information Security, with responsibilities for designing and policing corporate systems, required. One of the the phrases from the article which struck me most was "an emotional and ethical chameleon". In order to protect systems and react to security breaches you have to understand how people think and why they do certain things. Companies are made up of many different types of people, all with their own personal ethical code. Some may believe that a corporate policy is too strict, others that it is too lax. Some may try and breach policy in order to make money, others because they believe it unfair. Some may make official complaints because they see someone attempting to access pornography on the Internet from a company PC and feel offended. Others may complain because they see a colleague reading an innocent joke sent to them in an email and feel jealous that they weren't sent a copy. The way you react to these issues depends on the law, corporate policy and your understanding of the victim and perpetrator. I've used the emotional and ethical chameleon viewpoint regularly over the last few years and have shortened the phrase to e2chameleon for this site.

As I've got a full time job, I'm managing this site in my spare time. I do hope to keep it up to date with information on the latest risks, products and services to help you stay secure but I may not be able to update it as often as I like. The news section on the front page and the VirusWatch page are updated automatically so will always have the latest information for you no matter how busy I am.

If you have an comments, questions or suggestions about the site, please contact me at e2chameleon@btinternet.com.

Cheers,

Ian,
Webmaster, e2chameleon Information Security Resource.
